Town Garden Design in Tunbridge Wells — A Garden for Grown Ups

Small doesn’t have to mean ordinary. This beautifully considered town garden — just under 100sqm in the centre of Tunbridge Wells — proves that thoughtful design can transform even the most modest outdoor space into something truly special.

The client, a homeowner with a love of art and an eclectic eye for beautiful things, wanted more than a patch of lawn. He wanted a garden with a view from his kitchen and living space, a place to entertain, a place to escape — and above all, somewhere with real character and low maintenance planting.

Great design starts with great inspiration. For this project, Gardenproud drew on the extraordinary work of Sir Roy Strong and his iconic garden at The Laskett — a space renowned for its classical structure, wit, and deeply personal atmosphere.

That spirit informed every decision here: the formal arrangement of spaces, the use of classical elements alongside more eclectic touches, and the sense that this garden, though small, has real depth and personality.

The design begins with a new limestone paved terrace edged with contrasting black limestone setts — elegant underfoot and immediately setting the tone. This leads into a gravelled courtyard bordered by clean metal edging, centred on a bespoke distressed copper water feature created by Capital Garden Products.

Facing the water feature, a beautifully crafted arbour frames a bespoke curved mirror — designed by Gardenproud and made by Aldgate Home, finished in matching distressed copper. As well as adding a striking focal point, the mirror bounces light back into the garden and opens up new perspectives, making the space feel larger and more dynamic.

A boldly painted turquoise bench — individually sourced by the team — adds a playful, artistic note entirely in keeping with the client’s personality.

White trellising along three boundaries gives the garden a sense of enclosure and seclusion, while providing a crisp backdrop for planting. A series of matching Norman planters line the boundaries, with a central urn on a pedestal planted with an evergreen fern creating a striking focal point from the house.

When the sun goes down, the garden comes into its own. In-ground lighting at key positions, wall lights and downlighters beneath the arbour create a warm and dramatic effect — a garden that looks every bit as good after dark as it does in daylight.

The finishing touch? A stunning set of garden furniture from the Heveningham Collection — black powder-coated iron with contrasting cushions and a granite top — elegant, durable and perfectly in keeping with the overall scheme.
