Japanese Courtyard Garden Design in Norfolk
A Garden Rooted in a Single, Powerful Idea
The best garden designs tell a story — and this Japanese courtyard garden in Norfolk tells one beautifully. Inspired by the tranquil aesthetics of traditional Japanese design, every element of this project was considered as part of a cohesive whole, from the structure and materials right through to the planting and the client’s own adjoining office furniture and decor.
The result is a private, peaceful retreat that feels entirely intentional — a garden that transports you the moment you step into it.
Bespoke Design Details — Gate, Trellis and Staircase
At the heart of the design is a signature pattern — conceived by the Gardenproud team and used as the thread that ties every element together. First applied to the entrance gate and trellis screen, the pattern was precision-cut from Tricoya panels using a CNC machine. The same motif was then transferred to the galvanised steel staircase and balcony, with the balustrade panels and step treads formed using a laser cutting machine for a crisp, refined finish.
Framing for the gate and trellis was crafted in Accoya — like Tricoya, a chemically enhanced timber that performs exceptionally well outdoors in all weather conditions, offering the beauty of natural wood with outstanding durability.
Planting, Water and a Walled Garden Setting
The planting scheme is as considered as the structure. A striking Acer Palmatum Sango Kaku provides seasonal colour and elegant form, while Black Bamboo adds height, movement and an authentic Japanese atmosphere. Together they frame a space that feels calm and curated in equal measure.
A water feature adds the gentle sound and stillness so central to Japanese garden design, while a patio area and entrance steps complete the layout. The entire scheme sits within a beautifully walled garden setting — created by Gardenproud’s construction partners — that provides the seclusion and sense of enclosure the design demands.
On the office balcony above, a bright red lacquered Japanese-style chair — designed by the team — adds a final flourish, carrying the theme seamlessly from garden to interior.
