Family Garden Design in Speldhurst, Tunbridge Wells

A Garden the Whole Family Can Enjoy

Every family uses their garden differently — and the best garden designs reflect that. When Gardenproud were invited to assess this elevated property in Speldhurst, near Tunbridge Wells, we immediately saw both the potential and the challenge ahead.

The house had been beautifully refurbished, but the garden had been left untouched. A daunting 1.5m drop separated the back of the house from the outdoor space beyond, making it virtually unusable. Our brief was simple but ambitious: bridge that gap and create a family garden with something for everyone.

Understanding the Family’s Vision

Before putting pen to paper, we took the time to speak with every member of the family — from the adults who wanted to entertain and relax, to the younger members with energy to burn. Great garden design starts with great listening, and this project was no exception.

The result was a clear and collaborative vision: a multi-functional outdoor living space that would feel like a seamless extension of the home, with distinct zones designed around how the family actually lives.

Transforming a Challenging Slope Into a Stunning Garden

To unlock the full potential of the space, we excavated and removed approximately 100 cubic metres of earth — a significant undertaking that allowed us to create a series of beautifully terraced levels, each with its own purpose and character.

The transformation created four distinct areas: an entertainment zone directly adjacent to the house, an elevated lounge area with a water feature, a productive kitchen garden, and a generous lawn for sports. The terracing not only maximised functionality but gave the garden a dynamic, layered quality that adds real visual interest throughout the year.

From Unusable Slope to Outdoor Living Space

The result is nothing short of transformative. What was once a disconnected, inaccessible garden is now a vibrant outdoor living environment the whole family can enjoy — whether that’s al fresco dining on the entertainment terrace, relaxing by the water feature, growing their own produce, or letting the kids loose on the activity lawn.

It’s a garden designed around real life, built to be loved for years to come.
