Contemporary Driveway Design in Southborough, Tunbridge Wells

When a home makes a statement, its entrance should too. This stunning contemporary property on the outskirts of Tunbridge Wells — complete with glass walls, a sedum roof and meticulously designed gardens — deserved a driveway and courtyard entrance to match.

Gardenproud were appointed to transform a long, austere roadstone track into a bespoke driveway design and feature courtyard that would welcome visitors in style, reflecting the glamour of the house and the quality of its interiors.

The existing driveway ran some 40 metres alongside a long brick wall, stretching from the main entrance down to the road. An unfinished roadstone surface merged into a grass farm track, and while a striking Corten steel sliding door provided one moment of drama, the overall effect was stark and industrial — with no planting, no lighting, and little kerb appeal.

The track also needed significant structural work, requiring levelling and stabilisation before any new surface could be laid.

Our solution addressed both structure and aesthetics. A reinforced ‘H’ block retaining wall was installed below ground level to stabilise and level the driveway surface. The outer edge was then concealed by a newly formed earth bank — creating generous planting borders and housing fresh services for lighting and irrigation.

The driveway surface itself combines compacted Type One sub-base with a translucent grid membrane and attractive Yorkshire Cream aggregate, highlighted with sandstone setts. A continuous Corten steel edge runs the full length, anchoring the design with a warm, industrial-luxe finish that complements the architecture beautifully.

Carefully positioned Corten steel panels now break up the expanse of brick wall, doubling as cover plates for dramatic up-and-down lighting that casts a warm pattern across the surface after dark. A striking 1.6m Corten entrance pillar at the head of the drive features an LED strip light to set the scene from the moment you arrive.

Beyond the driveway edge, a grass bank planted with Portuguese Laurel hedging and feathered Hornbeam standards — all lit by Colindale spike lights and supported by an integrated irrigation system — creates a lush, softened boundary.

At the heart of it all lies the sunken courtyard entrance. Conceived as an outdoor entrance hallway, it draws you down a series of steps past layered planting beds. A gnarled old olive tree anchors the main bed, surrounded by evergreen ferns, lavender, salvias and a low Euonymus japonicus border hedge. A Corten steel water table, edged in soft Hakonechloa macra grass, sits at the centre — a warm, textural focal point that ties the Mediterranean theme together. Soft limestone paving completes the space, echoing the stonework found throughout the property.
